DIY outdoor lighting

Installing DIY outdoor lights begins with planning: map the area, choose low-voltage or solar fixtures for safety and simplicity, and measure distances to determine wire length and fixture spacing. Turn off power at the breaker before working on any electrical circuits, and use a voltage tester to confirm power is off. For low-voltage systems, run outdoor-rated cable from a transformer mounted near your electrical panel to each fixture using weatherproof connectors and bury cable 6–12 inches deep or secure it with landscape staples; for solar lights, position panels in full sun and mount fixtures where they will receive adequate sunlight. Use GFCI-protected circuits and outdoor-rated junction boxes for any hardwired connections, seal connections with silicone and waterproof tape, and test the system at night to adjust beam angles and brightness. If the project involves complex wiring, structural work, or local code compliance, consult a licensed electrician to ensure safety and proper permits.
